I am not sure whether I have figured out how to use this system, but I hope that by typing a message here that it will go to the participants of Panel 08 on "Culture, Identity, and the Politics of Difference of the Borderlands conference in Guwahati. If my understanding is correct, the rest of you will be giving papers, and I am supposed to be a discussant.
I need to tell you that if I am to say anything sensible about your papers, I will absolutely have to have them ahead of time. I was never very good at listening to a paper and making wise comments about them immediately afterwards. I need time to think about them. In addition, I am now growing deaf and I find it particularly difficult to understand easily in the cement walled rooms that are typical in India. When I agreed to be a discussant I was told that papers would to be available ahead of time, and I hope that is correct, and I hope that all of you will be able to manage.
I do not need them long ahead, but if I do not receive a paper by January 12th at the lates, two days before my departure from London for Guwahati, it is unlikely that I will be able to include them in my discussion.
I think that it would be safest if you would send your papers as attachments to my regular E-mail address. I'm not at al sure that I understand how this system works.

I hope you will all understand my needs here and that this will cause no undue difficulty.
I very much look forward to meeting you all in Guwahati.
Best wishes
