In Northeast India, every happy occasion is a reason to break into song or dance. From harvest to communal meetings, there is music for every mood. Over the past few days, Delhi has been getting a glimpse of this bonhomie at the Festival of Traditional Dance & Music of Northeast India, organised by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) at Kamani Auditorium.

To the sounds of the dhol, khol, jhal and flute, the dancers from Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Tripura, Assam and Sikkim performed a series of pieces dressed in traditional attire. The Reang tribe of Tripura evoked divine strength in a dance that saw them balance kerosene lamps on their heads, while Mizoram followed up with the Cheraw or bamboo dance. “It was a challenge to approach the apprehensive tribal dancers for the show. Yet, these tribal dances cannot be performed by anybody else. The effect would not be authentic otherwise,” said Ningthoujam Nabachandra, director of the show. The festival ended on Wednesday.
